Sports History

Petrolia Sports History Evolved over the years.

  • Hello Petrolia Ex-Students! Welcome to the NEW Web Home of the PESA!

Basketball for many years was the major sport for Petrolia youth.  Track, tennis, and baseball were also important Spring Sports after Basketball season ended.

In 1967 Petrolia’s enrollment had increased and maintained the level that UIL moved Petrolia from a “B” Classification to the UIL “A” classifcation which is now the “AA” Classification.

In the 1970’s after maintaining the increased enrollment and UIL “A” Classification, the Petrolia community encouraged and supported Coach Garland Nichols and the school board members to initiate the district’s Football program.  (Several Class AA Texas Districts never initiated a Football program and Basketball continues to be their major sport.)

The Petrolia School District was able to acquire the Wichita Falls, HS Coyote Field Bleachers after the district constructed the Wichita Falls’Memorial Stadium located on the SW Parkway.  Petrolia Community volunteers dismantled the Coyote Stadium steel frame Bleachers, transported them to Petrolia and reassembled it creating the first Pirate Football Field bleachers.
